3rd Grade Reading
By the end of 3rd grade, each student meets key benchmarks for success in reading and reading comprehension.
Generation Next is engaged in the following strategies to improve this outcome:
Generation Next Literacy Tutoring Network
Generation Next has convened literacy tutoring organizations from across both cities. Over the past year they have been learning about each other’s delivery methods, trainings, and culturally specific interventions. One of the agreed principles of the network is to focus on data and assessments to better meet the needs of children. 9 out of the 11 current network members have adapted the same assessment so that they can make better comparisons of what approaches are most helpful for students and to identify where duplication may exist. In addition, network members chose to focus on racial equity as a strategy for the 2015-2016 school year and each member opted to participate in a racial equity assessment of their organization and practices.
Gen Next Reads
Generation Next launched the Gen Next Reads campaign to increase the number and improve effectiveness of reading tutors and volunteers. Generation Next is referring potential tutors to established organizations experienced in improving student performance. Generation Next and the Minnesota Literacy Council are also providing training for volunteer readers who may not be able to make the time commitment as a tutor but still want to help as a volunteer reader in their community.
In every community there are great practitioners changing student’s lives. Generation Next will build upon the Spotlight initiative funded by Target and the United Way to recognize innovative school teams. Generation Next will continuously identify and highlight practices that are getting results with the various communities in our schools. This effort will be equally guided by both quantitative and qualitative data and will focus on the actions of individuals and leaders in our schools and community.
Generation Next will facilitate a network of principals and teachers to improve literacy by creating a learning community. Through this network, Generation Next will facilitate the sharing of best practices, provide needed assistance in implementation and change management, and further uncover school needs. This network will be aligned to district efforts, such as the adoption of new core materials in Minneapolis Public Schools.
